How to Take Proper Care of Your Aylla Barefoot Shoes

Buying our barefoot shoes is just the first step. The second? Keep them in such condition that they bring you joy and style, and last through more than one season. Whether you're the type to walk the world far and wide, or prefer leisurely café wanderings, we have a few tips on how to care for them. It’s not alchemy.

Steps toward genuine satisfaction

Before we list all the cleaners, a few small steps for humanity – yet huge for your shoes:

  • Laces. Always fully unlace when putting on or taking off your shoes. Forcing them on can damage the material, loosen seams, and weaken the overall shape.
  • Please stop removing shoes heel-first. It breaks our hearts—and the heel shape—because repeated stomp-removal causes cracking and loss of form.
  • If they get wet, always let them fully dry before wearing. No dryers, direct sun, hot radiators, open flames or fireplaces. High heat cracks and hardens leather, and fades color. Instead, let them dry at room temperature with time and care.

Pamper your barefoot shoes from the very first step

No lectures—here comes what you actually came for. What material are the shoes made of that you're about to give some love?

Most of our online collection is made from full‑grain leather, but we also use nubuck, synthetics, textile. Check the product description under your model to know exactly which material to treat.

Full‑grain leather

Full‑grain leather is strong and breathable. To preserve its suppleness and resilience, it requires regular care.

How to care for leather shoes (most of our models):

  • Remove surface dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth. Let dry.
  • Use a leather cleaner, like our favorite Collonil Bamboo Lotion. It gently removes old residue and outdoor grime.
  • Condition. We choose Renapur balm. It protects against dirt and moisture, restores color and shine, prevents cracking and stiffness. Apply an even layer, then buff with a cloth after drying.
  • Water‑repel. Use a spray like Collonil impregnation spray. It forms a protective film against moisture and fine dust.
  • Even if you don’t wear them daily, leather dries out in storage. We recommend a wellness session once a month—clean, condition and repel.

Synthetic leather / synthetic nubuck

Natural leather and its imitations each have their pros and cons. Though synthetic leather looks nearly identical, one major difference is: it doesn’t absorb creams because it has no pores. Yet it still needs care.

How to care for imitation leather shoes (e.g. THAK white, KECK Kids brown, KECK ochre, KECK blue, KECK black‑white):

  • Remove dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth. Let dry.
  • Use synthetic cleaner. We trust Collonil Soft Cleaner foam, gentle yet effective.
  • Unlike leather, synthetic should never be creamed or oiled. That causes blotches because there’s nowhere for the product to absorb.
  • Water‑repel. Use sprays made for synthetics and textiles, like Collonil CARBON PRO Extra. It protects and makes cleaning easier.
  • Synthetic doesn’t crack like real leather but can wear down or lose water resistance. Thus impregnation every 1x per month is recommended.

Nubuck

Nubuck is softly buffed leather. It feels velvety and has a matte appearance. While luxurious and pleasant, it's more sensitive to moisture and dirt—unless treated properly.

How to care for nubuck leather shoes (e.g., TIKSI nubuck, INCA nubuck):

  • Periodically remove dirt using a gentle combining brush with soft bristles.
  • Nubuck is best cleaned dry only, without soaking. Use gentle and natural cleaners that preserve its texture—like Collonil Bamboo lotion—which also nourishes.
  • Do NOT cream nubuck. This type of leather can't absorb oils, leading to unpleasant marks.
  • Water‑repel. A Collonil impregnation spray protects nubuck from moisture, keeps it flexible, and prevents drying.
  • As with all shoes, regular care extends life and appearance. Keep them clean and impregnate at least 1x per month.

Textile materials

Textiles are lightweight, breathable, and easy to maintain. We use Czech cotton canvas with OEKO‑TEX® certification—an internationally recognized seal for safe materials.

Maintaining textile shoes (e.g., NUNA):

  • Remove surface dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth. Let dry.
  • Use textile cleaner. Try the mild Collonil Soft Cleaner foam. Avoid harsh cleaners that may damage color.
  • Water‑repel. Use an impregnation spray with UV protection, like Collonil Waterstop UV, to prevent fading from the sun.
  • Resist machine washing—even for textiles. That stresses color, glue, and overall shape.
  • Like all shoes, textiles benefit from regular care—keep them clean and impregnate at least 1x per month.
